Are Areca plates compostable?

Updated: Jun 5

Areca plates are completely eco-friendly as well as disposable. Areca plates are the best alternative to plastic / polymer products and paper-based products. Areca plates are made from the sheath of the Areca palm tree's leaf.

It is recommended to cut the Areca palm leaf plates into smaller pieces as smaller the surface area, the quicker and more evenly they will decompose. Weekly turn your compost pile and mix these small Areca pieces as this will help speed up the process. The time of decomposition also depends of course on the temperature, moisture and other factors but in general these Areca palm leaf plates will break down within a period of just 6 to 8 weeks.

Paper plates, in contrast, will take over a year to completely break down ,and of course it is not at all a sustainable product, unlike the Areca palm leaf plates. Once Areca palm leaf plates are decomposed, there is absolutely nothing left behind, zero waste! The resulting compost using Areca leaves is known as “black gold” to gardeners, and can be used to nourish your garden, lawn and houseplants.
